10th Optoelectronics and Photonics Winter School NLP2019

The University of Trento, the Nanoscience Laboratory, and The University of Rome La Sapienza organize the 10th edition of the classical Optoelectronics and Photonics Winter school.

The school aims to bring together a large number of PhD students and young researchers from all parts of the world who during a one-week intense schedule, follow a series of lectures on selected topics. The lectures are held by internationally recognized experts in the field. At the same time, the students are encouraged to enjoy the beautiful location where the school is organized. To this end a large lunch break is considered to allow skiing and relaxing on the mountains or at the hotel facilities.

This year the school introduces students and post-docs to the concepts of nonlinear photonics, focusing on the hot topics that are driving the technological and scientific research. The target audience is PhD students and young researchers, who will have the opportunity to attend the lectures given by scientists leading of the nonlinear optics community.

The school will initially introduce the general concepts of nonlinear optics, with particular attention to the fiber and integrated optics platforms (both III-V and silicon). Then the lectures will focus on the main applications and fundamental research involving nonlinear optical processes (optical soliton and supercontinuum physics, frequency combs, parametric sources of quantum light for quantum photonics, wavelength conversion, distributed optical sensors, optical imaging, attosecond physics).

Informal events will be organized in order to help the networking between researchers and students. We will enjoy the beautiful surrounding during the free times with few organized events.

In addition to standard classes, rump evening sessions on hot topics in the field with free beers and beverages will be organized to facilitate discussions among students and lecturers.

Since this is a residential school, both the students and the lecturers will reside in the same hotel which will easy discussions in an informal venue or on the ski fields.

The conference will be organized in five main areas, each of which is divided in subareas.

In the evening, an ice-breaking event will be organized by the SPIE Student Chapter of the University of Trento.

From Monday to Friday the agenda will be the following:

  • Morning session (9.00-12.30). Three lectures with one coffee break
  • Lunch and long break to winter sport and discussion
  • Afternoon session (16.30-19.30). Three lectures
  • Dinner
  • Evening session (after 21.00). Different event for each day, including rump sessions, social dinner and poster sessions.

On Saturday, a closing ceremony will close the school.

During the school, a poster session to stimulate discussions and networking will take place.

The description of current activity of the students is encouraged.

While it is mandatory to submit an abstract to nlp2019@unitn.it at the registration time, it will not undergo any review process and it will be accepted as it is.

The abstract should contain a Title, Author(s) list and Affiliation and the text of max 250 words.

The poster format should be A0 or A1.

A prize for the best poster is offered by OSA.
During the interactive poster session, the School Directors will select the best poster. The posters and their presentation will be evaluated on the base of the quality, importance and relevance of the research  and on the quality of the presentation (both poster as well as discussion). The winner will receive 500 dollars and yearly free membership to OSA thanks to the Optical Society (OSA) sponsorship. OSA, through publications, events and services, is helping to advance the science of light by addressing the ongoing need for shared knowledge and innovation

The special Research Topics  on Nonlinear Photonics are open within the Section Optics and Photonics  of Frontiers in Physics or Frontiers in Materials. Here you will find all the information to submit your paper. Note that Frontiers in Physics is an online open access journal. There is a fee to publish in this journal and there is also a significant fee waiver program to allow everyone to publish their paper if accepted.

Participants to the school are encouraged to submit a manuscript about their poster to this Research Topics since together with the review papers or the original contributions of the lecturers will become an ebook on nonlinear photonics. We foresee a very valued and high impact ebook!

Registration deadline: 17 December, 2018 at 12.00 local time.

The registration fee is € 750 and will cover the lodging (full board), shuttle service, winter school kit, entry to all scientific sessions, participation to the special winter events, coffee breaks, welcome drink, social events and the use of the hotel facilities.
If you plan to bring some accompanying persons to the event, in the registration form you will find a dedicated section where you can register them.

IEEE student members are entitled of a reduction in the registration fee of 25€ by presenting an attestation of membership.

Registration grants

Grants to waive the registration fees are offered to selected participants. These grants are provided by  the sponsoring organization. In particular, Frontiers in Physics, the multidisciplinary open-access journal, is offering five grants. OptoSigma, the manufacturer of optical and opto-mechanical components, is offering 1 grant. Thorlabs, optical equipment company, is offering 2 grants. More grants will add.

To obtain this grant, applicants must:

  1. send an application request to nlp2019@unitn.it
  2. provide his/her CV, a motivation letter and a poster abstract
  3. join a statement that the travelling costs are covered by other financial sources

The grant application deadline is 10th of December 2018. Those who will receive the registration waivers will be informed by 12th of December 2018 by mail so that they can complete the registration procedure

Participants associated with the University of Trento (Master Students, Phd Students, Researchers, Professors etc.) must download this form and send it by e-mail or fax to the Organizing Secretary completely filled and signed by their Responsible of the funds. When registering they will have to select the corresponding registration fee (equal to euro 0.00) and the payment method "Free" (the registration fee will be covered by an internal payment).

The School will take place 20-26 January, 2019, in Andalo, Trentino – Italy at Hotel Andalo Gruppo Brenta

The soul of Hotel Andalo Gruppo Brenta is deeply mountain like, and dressed of elegance and sophistication: a perfect synergy of tradition and modernity.

Located on the gentle Trention’s mountains, in Andalo, a wide open green upland, relaxing and very close to the town centre.

Its position is ideal: in winter you will be close to the slopes (10 minutes walking distance, ski equipment can be rented on the spot) and it is a perfect starting point for a regenerating walk in the woods and fields.

SPA will do the rest.

The international Optoelectronics and Photonics Winter School is a biannual event which is traditionally being held in Trentino Region starting from 2001.

This is going to be the 10th edition and therefore special celebration will take place.

The different editions of the school have been organized periodically by the Nanoscience Laboratory of the University of Trento.

Throughout these years the School had a continuous success and has gained the fame of an important event among both young students and experts in the field.
